Frequently Asked Questions
How can I participate?
We are no longer recruiting participants for this trial.
Where is the trial taking place?
The trial is being held in the Winnipeg Capital Region area as the detailed maps of the posted speed limits are available for this area. For a map of the complete coverage area, click here.
How many participants are in the trial? What is the duration of the trial?
50 drivers will be participating for a total time of 4 months.
What is the structure of the trial?
The participants will be receiving no feedback on their driving style for the first and last 2 week periods, while in the 12 weeks in-between they will get real-time notification of when they are driving over the speed limit or travelling too close to the vehicle in front. They will receive points based on the amount of time they are 'good drivers'. The points are then converted into reward points that can be redeemed for goods or services.
How much are the rewards?
The rewards will vary by participant based on their level of compliance; however, participants can receive as much as $350 in points over the 12 week reward period of the trial.
How long does the installation of the system take?
The installation of the SafeMiles system is similar to installing a radio or alarm system on your vehicle. Each vehicle is a little different but generally the vehicle is ready within 1 hour.
When do the installations start?
The equipment will be installed starting July 20 and all units should be installed within two weeks.
Will the equipment interfere with my vehicle?
As the system does not in anyway control your vehicle it will not in anyway affect the operation of your vehicle. See System Description for more details.
Where is system installed?
The systems are installed by local car stereo installers.
Can I choose the time of the installation?
Yes (within the time frame of the installation period). All installations are coordinated with the participant to maximize the ease of the installation (and removal) process.
Where is hardware installed on the vehicle?
The SafeMiles computer box is usually installed under the steering wheel vanity cover. This is also the location for the connection to the vehicle's On-board Diagnostic (OBDII) communications port (this is standard connection on all vehicles newer than 1996). The display is attached with a special holder on the dashboard to the right of the steering column. The radar sensor is attached to the front of the car via a special bracket attached to the license plate.
Can I have the equipment installed at my own shop?
No, the system can only be installed by specially trained staff.
Is the equipment approved for use under the Highway Traffic Act?
